Pollination Info

Yellow Fig Tree Pollination

Yellow Fig Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Yellow Fig Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

Plant your Yellow Fig tree in a hole twice as wide and nearly as deep as the root's ball. You'll need to place it in a sunny spot in your yard that is protected from winter winds. You can also plant your Yellow Fig in a container and bring it inside when it gets cold. When you're done planting, add 2" of compost mulch extending out 4" from the base of the tree. Water immediately after planting and allow the water to soak all the way down to the base of the hole.

Watering: You'll need to frequently water your Yellow Fig until it is established. Pull back the mulch and feel the soil. If it is dry, you should water the tree. Once your tree is established, you can water every week or every 2 weeks in milder weather.

Fertilization: There's no need to fertilize your fig tree if you plant it in your garden. Instead, renew the compost mulch every month between spring and fall.

Pruning: Prune back any dead or diseased branches after the second harvest in summer or fall. Established trees should not require very much pruning at all.

Harvesting: Use gloves when harvesting your figs as the tree produced a latex that is irritating to skin. Your Yellow figs need to ripen on the tree. They will be ready to eat when they are easily plucked from the tree. Do not allow the fruit to rot on the tree, as this will encourage pests. Harvested fruit should be eaten immediately or refrigerated for no longer than 2 days. If you do not plan on eating your fresh fruit, you can dry it in the sun for 5 days or in a dehydrator for 12 hours. Dried figs will stay fresh for 6-8 months.
