Planting & Care

1.Planting: The Eugenia species thrives in full or partial sunlight in the morning or late afternoon. To grow eugenia topiaries indoors, place them near a south-facing window or patio door for plenty of light. For outdoor growth, find a sunny location. It should be planted in well-draining soil and kept in acidic soil (5.5 – 6.5pH) when outside. When planting outside, remove large rocks and till to a minimum depth of 18 inches.

When growing indoors, use potting soil that drains well and a big pot with multiple drainage holes. If your soil is high in clay, add sand for better drainage.

This species cannot withstand prolonged freezing temperatures (below 32°F). In those regions, it should be potted and moved indoors for the winter. In regions where freezing weather is not common, covering or wrapping your tree when a freeze is expected can help it survive.

2. Watering: Water regularly to keep the soil slightly moist, but avoid letting it dry out completely. Watering Eugenia plants regularly during the first few years helps develop deep roots. During extreme drought, deep watering once or twice weekly can keep them disease-free. Potted Eugenia topiaries may suffer from salt buildup in the soil, which can be resolved by immersing the pot in distilled water and watering with distilled water only. For potted Eugenia, keep the soil moist by placing the pot in a deep tray filled with distilled water. Check the soil's top inch for moisture and irrigate when it is dry half an inch down or more.

3. Fertilizing: Re-pot your Eugenia topiary every 2-3 years in early spring for healthy root growth. Add fertilizer to encourage root and foliage growth

4. Pruning: Eugenia trees can be shaped into beautiful topiaries. Prune and trim occasionally to maintain their shape. Avoid pruning in late summer and fall to prevent the spread of fungal spores and diseases. Wait until late winter or early spring to resume pruning.
