Planting & Care

Planting Instructions: Growing throughout valleys and ravines, painting the springtime landscape pink, the Eastern Redbud Tree is a must. Though it’s the state tree of Oklahoma, this particular variety was grown in California to perform well in California. Here are a few planting tips to keep in mind:

Choose a location with full sun to partial shade (meaning 4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day). And the tree is not picky when it comes to soil but does perform best in a well-drained location.

From there, dig a hole that’s at least two to three times the size of your tree’s root ball. After placing your Eastern Redbud, back fill the soil, tamp down to ensure air pockets are eliminated, and water your newly-planted tree.

Watering: The Eastern Redbud Tree does tolerate moderate dry spells, but if you’ve planted yours in full sun, it should be watered regularly. A layer of mulch should also be added to the soil to ensure it stays cooler and evenly moist during summer months.

Fertilizing: During spring, you can apply compost or a complete fertilizer, such as 5-10-5. Spread the fertilizer evenly according to label instructions for best results.

Pruning: Prune your Eastern Redbud Tree as needed to remove weak portions, dead or diseased limbs. It’s best to prune your tree right after it has flowered or during late fall, when the tree is dormant.
