Early Spring Blooms That Last for Months

Why Debutante Camellias?

Impressive 4-inch, peony-like pink blooms set the Debutante Camellia apart, starting in fall lasting all the way to early spring!

Plus, these large, explosive blooms cover the Debutante when other plants are dormant. Because the Debutante is easy to grow, with drought tolerance and hardiness down to 10 degrees, it offers extra color without the work. Despite its delicate, fragrant blooms, the Camellia requires little attention to reach maturity, thriving on little water and surviving a late or early frost with ease.

And its evergreen foliage makes it well-suited for privacy screens. Not only will you get eye-catching blooms that are sure to get the neighbors’ attention, but you’ll also get deep, vibrant green hedging for colorful borders that block out unsightly areas. It even adapts well to partial sun and some shade, thriving where other blooming varieties won’t.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Well-drained soil and full to partial shade (this means very little direct sunlight): That’s all your Debutante needs to thrive. Aside from that, try to plant the Camellia in a location that offers some protection during the extra cold winds of winter. We also recommend planting during the fall or winter seasons.

Once you’ve selected your location, dig a planting hole that is twice the diameter of the root ball and just as deep. Then, fill the hole, tamp the soil down around the roots to remove air pockets, and water the plant thoroughly to help settle the soil. Finally, apply a 2 to 3-inch layer of mulch around the base of the plant to keep the area moist and deter weed growth.

2. Watering: Keep the soil moist for the first year of growth – generally, this means watering about once or twice weekly. Take care not to oversaturate the soil, but if you’re not sure when to water, simply check the surrounding soil about 2 to 3 inches down. If the soil is dry here, it’s time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilize your tree in the spring after the flowers have dropped – ideally using a soluble fertilizer once or twice a month in spring and mid-summer.

4. Pruning: Though the Debutante rarely requires pruning, you may remove any broken or damaged branches after summer flowering. Also, thinning out the interior branches and shortening the lower limbs will encourage upright growth.
